U.S. startup Anthropic is in dire need of new computing power as it gears up for an IPO and has tens of billions of dollars in monthly leasing transactions. Anthropic’s new $35 billion agreement with the Lambda supplier will give Anthropic access to data centers being built in Texas.

NVIDIA in this transaction Hut 8 is not only involved as an investor in Lambda, but will actually lease a designated data center from Anthropic, which Hut 8 is also involved in building. The exact details of the mutual agreement between Nvidia and Anthropic are not specified, but in the era of “ring deals” in this sense, everything is intertwined in sometimes very cunning ways.
It is worth noting that after this round of US$3 billion in financing, the capital of cloud computing provider Lambda itself will barely exceed US$12 billion. In November, the company raised half of its funding and signed a deal with Microsoft that involves creating a computing infrastructure containing tens of thousands of Nvidia accelerators.
If we return to Anthropic’s activity, the Lambda deal would be just one of several the startup has struck in recent months. The deal with Fluidstack is expected to be worth $50 billion; the startup leased a data center from Elon Musk’s SpaceX for $45 billion, but the funds will be paid out over several years. In West Virginia, Anthropic leases $45 billion worth of computing power from Nscale. Anthropic will have to use funds raised during its upcoming IPO to meet those needs.
