Former BioWare project director Mark Darrah shared his memories of his 24 years at the studio on The Examined Game podcast, pointing out the company’s problems and the main reasons for Anthem’s failure. This interview is important for the industry, as the development veteran honestly calls out the systemic failings of major studios and explains the secrets of his competitors’ success.
Darragh points out that the famous “BioWare magic” is built on strong characters and the joy of creating games through grueling overtime, which is why the studio has never had a clear workflow. Over time, the focus shifted to graphics, multiplayer, and the open world, and attempts to work on multiple large projects at the same time, such as Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem, damaged the company’s image. At the same time, he praised Larian Studios’ courage and ability to focus on one game at a time, although returning to the Divinity series after Baldur’s Gate 3 may surprise some new viewers.
The developer also touched on the topic of GTA 6, expressing hope that the scale of the popular game will not become the industry standard, otherwise the gaming industry will face financial collapse. In his opinion, projects like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 should be real examples worth emulating.
