Fans of Warhammer 40,000 have a great way to study the structure of the universe without the need for thick encyclopedias – enthusiast Sami Gashi has created a free 3D map of the galaxy, available at Browser.
The project, called “Cartographia Imperialis,” allows you to travel around the galaxy and observe known worlds and regions in three dimensions. The controls are reminiscent of an isometric game: the left mouse button moves the map, the right mouse button rotates the camera, and the scroll wheel handles zooming. On important planets and territories you can find small references to the lore, and you can easily find the right place via the built-in index.
The project’s performance is particularly impressive. Although the scale and visual design are different, the map loads almost instantly and does not require any programs to be installed. There are no ads here either. The description text adopts the dark style of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, perfectly conveying its atmosphere. For example, descriptions of the hive world of Juran talk about production quotas, death tolls, and the willingness of local authorities to do whatever is necessary to support production.
