Bethesda Game Studios creative director Todd Howard has dreamed of making a space role-playing game called Starfield for 25 years, but most of the studio’s employees didn’t share his aspirations.

“The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” lead designer Kurt Kuhlman was interviewed FRVR Admitting that after 2015’s Fallout 4, the BGS team originally wanted to take on The Elder Scrolls 6, but had to be distracted by Fallout 76.
According to Kuhlman, Bethesda Game Studios was originally not supposed to be involved in the creation of “Fallout 76,” but the Bethesda Austin team (formerly BattleCry Studios) couldn’t handle it and needed to get the main team involved.

After Fallout 76, Howard announced to the Skyrim and Fallout 4 teams, with management’s permission, that their next project would not be The Elder Scrolls VI: “No, we’re making Starry Night.”. Originally the game was supposed to be “The greatest space RPG ever”.
“Personally, I would rather make TES 6 than 76 and Starfield. I think that’s true for most studios.<...>The team wasn’t exactly eager to make a space game. Instead Todd said, ‘You know what, team? We’re making this space game. ‘”Kullman recalled.

Contrary to Howard’s hopes, Starfield didn’t go down as the greatest space RPG in history (instead, it was a complete letdown for fans), although according to the man in charge, the series still has a long way to go.
The Elder Scrolls VI was announced at E3 2018 and will enter active development in the summer of 2023. According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, the game is still some time away from release. “At least two or three years”.
