The disc-to-digital feature has been in active testing for over a week, with many players responding positively to Microsoft’s move to convert physical copies of games to digital titles. Meanwhile, the Xbox team has implemented the feature in more than 1,200 games since launch, and they promise to expand that number over time.
The main obstacle Xbox faces in converting discs to digital is the rights holders. Not all publishers are ready to support the program, and some are partially supporting individual projects.
Gamers have discovered that publishers are now completely ignoring disc-to-digital, meaning that none of their games can be transferred from disk to digital copies:
- Square Enix
- Ubisoft
- SEGA
- Bandai Namco
It’s also worth noting that not all Xbox games currently support disc-to-digital playback. The most notable example is the Forza Horizon series, which does not support this feature in any part. It is believed to be related to the vehicle registration plate.
Microsoft encourages players to stay tuned for updates and to regularly try to “digitize” their discs, as things may change with each specific game. For example, they recently fixed an issue with Halo Infinite.
