Apple launches A20 Pro single-chip platform— “A remarkable chip that sets a new benchmark for mobile computing”. The CPU adopts a six-core architecture with two powerful cores and four energy-saving cores.

The CPU now offers two new “super cores,” which the company describes as “desktop-class” cores that are the fastest in smartphones and are up to 20 percent faster. They also come with four energy-saving cores.
The graphics subsystem has also been redesigned and turned into seven cores, improving graphics task performance by up to 40%; the memory bandwidth has also been increased. The GPU’s built-in neural accelerator delivers twice the FP8 performance of previous generation platforms – large language models can be run directly on the device.
The Apple A20 Pro comes with an additional Neural Engine, doubling the total number of cores to 32. The engine doubles the performance of its predecessor, improves energy efficiency, and now supports 8-bit floating point (FP8) calculations. In order for the chip to reach its maximum potential under long-term load, effective thermal management becomes critical – to solve this problem, Apple redesigned the chip enclosure using a solution modeled after older M-series processors. It involves direct contact of the processor and memory with the evaporation chamber, thereby improving heat dissipation. Compared to the iPhone 17 Pro, the size of the vapor chamber is tripled.
Apple compared the long-term performance of the new products to results from previous generations: The new A20 Pro in the iPhone 18 Pro is 40 percent faster in long-term tasks than last year’s A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro, and twice as fast as the A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro.
