In 2025, Microsoft completely abandoned the Xbox avatar system. It was first introduced in the Xbox 360 generation and then received a major redesign in the Xbox One generation.
An Xbox fan has restored the classic Xbox 360 avatar editor in the browser, and now anyone can try it. The project is named 360 areas And contains the complete catalog of 21,425 items released by Microsoft for avatars on the console.
The project’s creator said on Reddit that he has been working on 360sona for nearly a year. The browser version includes the Halo, Gears, NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB series, as well as items from University, adidas, Puma and several other third-party series. Additionally, he highlighted the presence of 2,638 interactive accessories, each of which reproduces its own animation.
According to the developers, the hardest part is restoring the Xbox 360 rendering system. The raw editor uses its own shaders, skeletal models, animation formats, and camera settings, but doesn’t actually have any files. The project author independently studied the operation of the system and ported it to WebGL 2.
Anyone can create an avatar directly in the browser. To save, authorization options are provided using a login name and password; no email address is required when registering.
