Wolverine , the highly anticipated Marvel action-adventure game from Insomniac Games, failed to live up to the high expectations of the industry press and gaming community. As can be seen from the current score aggressor on Metacritic, the current average score for PlayStation 5 exclusive games is only around 77 to 78 points. That makes the comic book-based game the studio’s lowest-rated game in several years, well behind previous milestones like Marvel’s Spider-Man or Ratchet & Clank: Rift.
There have been serious disagreements in international test reports. Positive reviews highlighted the uncompromisingly dark presentation, the technically superb presentation, and the intense playing feel of the first few hours. The goal of portraying the character of Logan in an uncompromisingly brutal manner is largely successful in terms of atmosphere.
However, critics criticized the game for lacking depth and being noticeably monotonous as the adventure progressed. The combat system offers too little variety in the long run, while the linear campaign is slowed down by formulaic mission design and a disjointed plot.
This lukewarm response comes at the worst possible time for Sony. The lineup of first-party exclusives on PlayStation 5 has been in check lately, which is why Marvel’s Wolverine was considered a must-have blockbuster ahead of time. Even though the nearly 78 average rating is by no means a disastrous failure, the feedback doesn’t live up to the general expectations for Sony’s massive homebrew effort.
Insomniac Games is focusing on a tighter, nearly 15-hour experience that’s taking a different path from the sprawling open-world games of the past, but according to Presstenor, the legendary X-Men hero just isn’t doing enough to be the hit he’d hoped for. It remains to be seen how the sales figures develop now. The desire for new PS5 games is strong, as is the advance hype.
