The 8-pin power connector for graphics cards has long been considered much more reliable than the modern 16-pin connector, but it turns out that it doesn’t completely protect against overheating either. Radeon RX 7900 XTX users reported severe damage to two of the three 8-pin connections connected via the Thermal Grizzly WireView adapter.
According to the store owner, the graphics card issues started a few months ago – the system periodically froze and images suddenly disappeared. The reason was discovered after reinstalling the graphics card. The two 8-pin connectors sustained significant damage – the contacts and the plastic casing surrounding them were partially melted. This makes the connector difficult to remove.
Of course, it’s worth clarifying that the main victim here is the adapter itself, not the graphics card. Therefore, we can draw certain conclusions about this adapter.
