Jokes about a possible relationship between Moskovich and Italian brand Maserati may unexpectedly turn out to be prophetic, as JAC Motors may be involved in the production of cars for both brands. At the very least, Chinese media are reporting that Maserati is in talks with Huawei and JAC Motors over the possibility of co-developing two new electric vehicle models.

Automatic time publishing of resource references CLP Postciting multiple sources, spread the message. With the help of the two Chinese partners, Maserati reportedly plans to bring to market a mid-size electric crossover and its classic GT model, with the latter planned to be launched first. This will not be the first such electric car in the history of the brand, because back in October 2022, Maserati launched the GranTurismo model (pictured above), which in the Folgore modification was supposed to rely entirely on electric traction, with three electric motors and a battery with a capacity of 92.5 kWh.

The sources were unable to clarify whether an agreement had been reached between Maserati, Huawei and JAC Motors, nor could they say when the new models might be launched. It’s worth considering that partnerships with Chinese automakers in general are nothing new for Stellantis, which owns the Italian brand, as the joint venture with Zero Sports Cars has already begun penetrating the European market with cheap, locally assembled electric vehicles. The deal between Stellantis and Zero Sports Cars was completed in May 2024, with the former acquiring slightly more than 20% of the latter. Stellantis holds a 51% stake in the joint venture, while the company also holds two seats on Zero Sports Car’s board of directors.

Maserati’s cooperation with Huawei and JAC Motors is expected to include large-scale assembly of electric vehicles in Italy after shipment from Anhui province. The interior of a Maserati car will eventually take shape in Italy. The finished product will be promoted in Italy, France, Germany and the Middle East. Apparently, Huawei will be responsible for the in-vehicle electronics and software, as is the case with other automakers.

In China, the jointly developed machines are likely to be offered under the Maextro brand, which is a collaboration between Huawei and JAC Automobiles. It was reported in May this year that the first Maserati model built under the plan will be launched in the second half of 2027. That’s not to say the original Maserati is doing well: In 2025, the brand sold fewer than 8,000 cars, down more than 80% from its record-breaking year in 2017. The company ended last year with an operating loss of 198 million euros.
