Anthropic has quietly opened an experimental lab in an attempt to expand the reach of its artificial intelligence technology into drug development. The facility has reportedly begun operations in the San Francisco Bay Area Reuters Two people familiar with the matter were quoted as saying.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of Anthropic’s biomedical research division, confirmed the lab’s opening. “We believe that in biology, the ultimate validation of results requires and will continue to require real laboratory experiments for a long time to come. That’s exactly what we did. Our approach is typical of most biotech companies: we do some work in our own facilities and some with partners.”he said. Like other biotech companies, Anthropic is bringing physical automation technology to the facility’s laboratory processes – the company is looking to expand the capabilities of its artificial intelligence agent, Claude, to control robotic systems to conduct scientific experiments with minimal human intervention. At the same time, human control and involvement remain necessary to ensure safety, Anthropic added. The company announced its intention to develop the drug last summer, and Mr. Kauderer-Abrams later said Anthropic would pursue preclinical research in areas that traditional pharmaceutical companies did not find financially attractive.
The company launched the Claude Science system, Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan joined its board of directors, and startup Coefficient Bio was absorbed – in a deal valued at around $400 million in stock, according to unofficial sources. Anthropic is currently expanding its own laboratory capabilities to speed up work and gain first-hand experience in biology, while outsourcing some tasks where financially feasible. Trust issues remain an obstacle: Customers may worry that Anthropic will use data from its competing drug development projects to train its systems, even if the data is siled and access is restricted.
