It’s worth noting that the company’s computing capacity in Memphis is managed quite flexibly. Colossus 1, for example, will be leased over the next few years to Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup in need of computing resources. If SpaceX itself unexpectedly needs the data center, it reserves the right to terminate the lease agreement with Anthropic by giving advance notice to the tenant.
Google is also considering leasing SpaceX’s computing power; Cursor, a startup that showed similar intentions, was eventually acquired by SpaceX, and Colossus 2 has also been booked by the startup Reflection AI, which will pay about $6.3 billion for the lease until 2029. Given the composition of computing power in the Memphis data center described by Musk, Reflection AI will be able to use more modern and efficient Nvidia chips than Anthropic. The data center lease agreement with Google will bring SpaceX about $30 billion in revenue by mid-2029, at which time Anthropic will pay it nearly $45 billion. SpaceX itself has already rushed into space in its data center expansion plan, and will begin deploying satellites equipped with Nvidia chip computing power in space as soon as next year.
