US developer studio Bungie has announced fundamental revisions to its multiplayer shooter Marathon as part of a detailed status report titled The Future of Marathon. As the studio management surrounding Del Walker and Julia Nardin acknowledged, focusing on a pure, highly competitive extraction shooter wasn’t enough to ensure the game’s long-term viability. As a result, the team is planning a multi-phase roadmap that will gradually expand the game to include more accessible experiences. Key milestones include the introduction of a PvE-only mode, a dedicated PvP test mode, a social hub with a shooting range, as well as major advancements and UI overhauls.
The planned reorganization will occur gradually over several release waves and heralds the end of the previously strict seasonal model. The “Night Refresh” update will be launched in October 2026, and the reward structure and progress system will be optimized in the short term to eliminate existing upgrade frustration points.
The first major transformation program will be launched in December and is called Symbiosis. With this update, Bungie is introducing a permanent PvE mode for the first time, allowing players to explore the threatening environment of Tau Ceti IV without the risk of constant attacks from enemy players.
Parallel to the PvE component, the December update brings experimental PvP formats such as classic team deathmatch, providing players with a low-risk environment to test gear and movement modes. On the exploration front, Bungie is expanding the outer zones with new spike areas and a massive final boss, the Tick Queen. With the new Bishop Runner shell, a character type that specializes in melee combat and quick raid tactics joins the ranks.
To make the complex mechanics more accessible to newcomers, the developers are integrating a social hub sponsored by the CyAc faction. This encounter site provides a comprehensive firing range for testing weapons, skills, and structures under ONI supervision.
The adjustment is expected to reach its peak in March 2027, when individual system components will be merged into a networked overall system. In the interim, Bungie promises a brand new zone, new alien enemy types, a revised weighing mechanic for deep customization of runner shells, and stronger mission narrative integration.
With this step, the studio emphasizes that while Marathon remains a core pillar of the company’s future, community feedback has made it clear that PvEvP can only represent one of several equivalent gameplay styles in the future ecosystem.
