It is said that Intel is negotiating with Taiwanese display manufacturer AU Optronics to cooperate in MicroLED. However, from the available information, we may not be talking about making affordable gaming monitors, but technology that directly integrates microcircuits with glass substrates.
The project is based on Intel’s Micro LED IC packaging patent, which involves placing a portion of a semiconductor die inside a glass substrate. This approach has the potential to simplify component packaging and reduce costs. In particular, this technology can be used in systems with high-density computing and CPO optical connections required for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Having said that, MicroLED does remain one of the most promising display technologies. Each pixel and sub-pixel acts as an individual light source, providing precise image control. Such panels are also likely to be brighter, less susceptible to degradation, and, as mentioned, offer higher refresh rates than OLEDs. The main hurdle remains the price and size of individual pixels in modern MicroLEDs – these displays cost tens of thousands of dollars, and compact panels simply don’t exist.
