The Japanese gaming market, which has traditionally been focused on Nintendo mobile devices and home consoles, is facing a huge shift. The latest data from the Japan Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association (CESA) shows that the PC segment has achieved a huge leap in a short period of time: revenue reached 132.1 billion yen in 2021, and by the end of 2025, this number exceeded the historical mark of 300 billion yen for the first time.
Experts say the main catalyst for change is the rapid growth of streaming culture on the YouTube and Twitch platforms. Younger generations of Japanese gamers are increasingly choosing PCs for long-term projects, competitive events, and large sandboxes. It is worth noting that the 12 most profitable games on Steam in Japan are all dominated by Western games and multiplayer games. The only exception for local publishers is Capcom’s masterpiece “Monster Hunter: Wild”.
While mobile devices still hold a commanding lead with 71% share, and consoles are also holding their own thanks to new products like the Switch 2, the rapid rise of PCs has doubled their market share to 12%. More and more Japanese developers are turning to PCs to adapt to changing audience preferences.
