The number of system vulnerabilities discovered by Japan’s major banks has increased dramatically – as of August, the number had doubled year-on-year and continues to grow. Artificial intelligence brings both threats and benefits in the field of cybersecurity.

proposed by publication Nikkei Asian Review The data helps assess how Japanese banks have responded to changes in cybersecurity since Anthropic released its cutting-edge artificial intelligence model Claude Mythos in April. Modern AI systems are discovering more vulnerabilities faster than humans, forcing organizations to race against time to prevent hackers from exploiting them.

“An attacker only needs to exploit a single critical vulnerability, while payment system operators and service providers must protect a large attack surface. Because of this asymmetry, the industry must consciously use artificial intelligence to improve the security of our trusted payment systems.”” said Christopher Waller, a member of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

Anthropic opened access to Mythos to major Japanese banks this summer, a situation further complicated by requests from U.S. authorities to suspend access to the model for foreign users. The bank intends to explore the possibility of using the tool to identify vulnerabilities and eliminate weaknesses. In May, Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) called on financial groups to strengthen protective measures. The regulator recommended that market participants consider voluntary suspensions of critical services to prevent the spread of damage caused by cyberattacks.

At the request of the FSA and the Bank of Japan, Financials ISAC Japan, an organization that specializes in combating cyberattacks on financial institutions, is developing instructions to prevent hacker attacks, which will serve as operational guidelines for banks.
