Microsoft has announced a series of major updates to Explorer and the contextual menus used on the Windows 11 desktop. So the software giant plans to speed up contextual menus and make them simpler and more customizable.

News that Microsoft was planning to make major changes to the contextual menu system in Windows 11 came to light last month, and now the company has officially confirmed the information. In fact, Microsoft is already preparing to release several preview builds of Windows 11 with the new contextual menu system. They will be available to Windows Insiders soon.

Microsoft has confirmed that the current contextual menu system in Windows 11 is not optimal. “Over time, menus became cluttered and slow, and we realized we needed to significantly reduce the time between a right-click and the time the menu appears for interaction. Today, we’re launching an updated contextual menu that delivers a faster, simpler, and more customizable experience. The updated design reduces top-level menu clutter, provides easy access to frequently used options, and provides a new settings interface that provides greater control over what appears in the menu.Microsoft engineer Michael Novak commented on the issue on the developer blog.

According to sources, Microsoft has indeed significantly improved the way contextual menus work in Windows 11 compared to stable versions of the operating system. The updated preset layout contains fewer elements, making it less cluttered. In addition to this, right-click response time has also been improved.

Microsoft will eventually allow users to customize contextual menus to suit their needs. You can enable or disable any of the available actions, the option to display file extensions, etc. In addition, if necessary, users can restore the layout of Windows 10 contextual menus, which is significantly different from the layout in Windows 11 and is more familiar to many users.

“We know that over the years, many users have developed a habit called “muscle memory” when using Windows 10 menus. That’s why we’ve added some options so you can return to a familiar look and feel. “You can now have basic operations like cut, copy, paste, rename, delete, and share appear directly as lists in the menu, instead of a line of people moving to the quickest property.”the developer said in a statement.

The announced changes look very useful as they will make the experience of interacting with Windows 11 more convenient. The updated contextual menu will be available to Windows Insider members this week. It’s unclear when Microsoft plans to add them to stable versions of the operating system.
