The Doom game was launched on another device that was not originally intended for gaming. Developer lauris-nl has released a playable version of the popular shooter for the Canon EOS 550D DSLR (also known as the Rebel T2i and Kiss X4). To do this, we installed special open source Magic Lantern firmware on the device.

The EOS 550D was launched in 2010. It is equipped with a 180,000-pixel CMOS sensor and a 3-inch TFT display. The Canon DIGIC 4 processor is responsible for image processing in the device. The Doom port operates directly on the camera and does not broadcast gameplay from other systems.
The game uses the physical controls of the EOS 550D to control the game. The direction keys are used to move and turn, SET is used to shoot, PLAY is used to open doors and switch, and the rear wheel is used to change weapons. You can also run and strafe by holding down the zoom button.
Enthusiasts also use the camera’s own hardware to achieve audio output. Doom’s original 8-bit effects are mixed with synthesized music and output in 48 kHz mono. In secondary display mode, gameplay is streamed at a resolution of 360×240 pixels, with each pixel represented as a 2×2 block on a Magic Light raster image with a resolution of 720×480 pixels.
Current version Doom 550D v0.4.1 Only supports Canon EOS 550D camera with Canon firmware 1.0.9. The developers specifically warn users not to install this binary on other camera models or firmware versions.
Doom has long been ported to various hardware that was not originally intended for the game. The game has previously been available on wireless headphones, e-cigarettes and Casio calculators, as well as Anker chargers with 2.26-inch displays. This is not a comprehensive list of unusual “gaming” devices.
