Massive layoffs in the Xbox division have hit legendary id Software hard: the creator of DOOM and Quake has seen its staff cut by more than half. Sudden layoffs in Microsoft Teams over closed calls destabilized the team and resulted in the loss of unique experts with years of experience, according to former and current employees at the studio.
Amid rumors that the studio may move to support other teams or be forced to abandon its proprietary engine, executive producer Marty Stratton assured fans that id Software will continue to develop its own projects and will remain true to id Tech’s technology alongside MachineGames. However, the remaining developers have publicly stated that maintaining the same level of AAA quality with reduced staff will be difficult.
