Geralt of Rivia makes a surprising return. The award-winning open world epic The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting a completely remastered version, developer CD Projekt RED announced in a surprise announcement. After the next-generation upgrade in 2022, the producers once again focused on the visual and technical presentation of the game. The revised new version is scheduled to be released simultaneously on September 29, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
Even the most devoted followers of The Witcher saga might not have expected this. CD Projekt RED surprised the community with the release of The Witcher 3 Remastered. Eleven years after the original release of Geralt’s famous open-world adventure, the creators have given the classic a fundamental makeover based on the latest rendering technology. The new version should not only set the visual standard, but also improve the technical foundation in order to best prepare the game for the upcoming content expansion and the future of the franchise.
In addition to the technical modifications, the game mechanics were also deeply affected. We’re talking about modifications to the combat system, a rework of the skill system, improvements to enemy behavior, optimizations while riding, new effects for the wizard’s symbol, new finishers, and even a transformation system. Quality of life improvements and expanded mod support were also mentioned.
The developer’s goal is to make The Witcher 3 as close to the standards of current-gen games as possible. In addition to PC, there are also PlayStation 5 and Xbox series
The announcement also comes as a huge surprise for the existing community: all players who already own the original base game on PC or current consoles can download the remastered upgrade completely free of charge. What’s more: CD Projekt RED is using this opportunity to completely break the barriers of The Witcher universe before the next major content chapter is released. Anyone who owns the base version will also get two large story expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, to unlock at no additional cost as part of the remastered patch.
Of course that’s not all, as CD Projekt RED also released the first trailer for its upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past, but didn’t provide any further details on a release date:
