Creative Assembly is launching the first phase of beta testing of the Pantheon update for Total War: Rome II – Emperor Edition. The first beta version, called MARS, will focus on combat and should make it more tactical, heavier and obviously dependent on combat conditions.
One of the major changes is critical hit, so soldiers will be able to die from one hit. Armor and damage will also be redesigned: defense will have a more linear effect, base damage will become more stable, and armor-piercing attacks will no longer completely ignore armor. All spears will now force cavalry to abandon frontal attacks, and the specialist charge defense mechanic will get a new job – it will reduce attacker damage while increasing the defender’s strength.
Changes affect morale, fatigue, and unit physics. Flanking and terrain will become more important, fatigue will have a greater impact on troops, and new mass and speed values should make movement and cavalry attacks more convincing. The developers will also add more formation options, improve player and AI grouping formations, and change their control.
After the beta version is released, the developers will collect feedback and adjust the balance. To participate, you need to enable Total War: Rome II – Emperor Edition on Steam, go to the Builds & Tests section and select “Pantheon”. You can always go back to the regular version if needed.
