Amid internal discussions in the United States, Chinese startups are aggressively expanding the capabilities of their neural networks to compete with market leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic. At the same time, Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for the establishment of a consensus-based global artificial intelligence governance system at the BRICS Summit in India. Chinese authorities have also announced plans to help build an open community of AI developers within the European Union, which currently unites 11 countries, including Russia.
Anthropic and OpenAI are simultaneously preparing for possible initial public offerings, although neither company has announced an official IPO date. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company may not go public this year, citing security concerns. At the same time, despite tensions with Amodei, who left OpenAI at the end of 2020 and founded Anthropic, Altman supported his proposal, saying that there was a need to “curb the speed of development of advanced systems.”
The initiative of the head of Anthropic is also supported by other well-known representatives of the industry. Demis Hassabis, chairman of Google DeepMind, said Amodei’s article points in the right direction, although the specifics remain to be determined. Musk, the head of Tesla and SpaceX, has also responded favorably to proposals to slow the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems.
