Epic Games has confirmed the release date for an official collaboration between battle royale shooter Fortress Heroes and Square Enix’s role-playing game series Kingdom Hearts. After months of speculation, the developers announced through official channels that this wave of content will be released on September 17th as part of the next server update. The linked content includes a total of four playable character skins of well-known series characters, as well as matching cosmetics, equipment and in-game items. As a result, Epic Games is bringing one of the most popular crossover brands in recent years into its own gaming world.
The lineup for this version includes the four core characters of the series: protagonist Sora, his companions Riku and Kairi, and character Roxas. The visual design is mainly based on the model template of “Kingdom Hearts II”.
The trailer released in advance showed the character Sora possessing the iconic Keyblade. However, the weapon in the Fortress Heroes variant comes with the loot camel amulet instead of the original Mickey Mouse pendant. In addition to purely visual variants in the item shop, the Keyblade will also be available as a functional weapon on in-game islands after the server update.
The September 17 release date coincides with Fortnite’s v42.20 update. The integration marks the end of speculation that first emerged in February. For Square Enix, the campaign also serves as an advertising platform ahead of future releases for the series.
With the release of the game, Epic Games is solidifying its strategy of deeply integrating popular brands from Japanese pop and video game culture into the shooter ecosystem. The interaction of paid skins and temporary gameplay mechanics remains a core element of directly engaging an active player base during major patch releases.
