Developer Blizzard Entertainment’s support for multiplayer online battle arena game Heroes of the Storm took a surprising turn at BlizzCon 2026. After active development on the game was officially scaled back in the summer of 2022 and the game was only operating through a handful of maintenance patches, the studio revealed a new playable hero on the main stage. The new addition is Xal’atath, the main antagonist of the current World of Warcraft expansion. The additional content marks the first new character released since Hogger was released in December 2020, and the first time the brand has shown clear signs of life in nearly six years.
Xal’atath, from World of Warcraft, will be integrated into Heroes of the Storm’s existing roster as a ranged assassin. The game’s mechanical design relies heavily on area damage and space control through void abilities, but in turn, it’s less survivable under direct focus pressure.
Following the announcement, the character will enter the Public Test Server (PTR) on September 14, 2026, before finally being released on the live server on September 28.
In addition to the character reveal, Blizzard also held a “Classic Cup” tournament at the exhibition, in which influential professional teams from the past such as Dignitas and Gen.G competed against each other.
In a subsequent statement, Blizzard president Johanna Faries expressed cautious optimism about the future of the game. While the release of Xal’atath by no means represents an automatic return to the original high-frequency development cycle or the esports format of the Heroes Global Championship, company management is monitoring the reaction and engagement of the active player base very closely. Further patches and evaluation of future character releases are clearly planned and will depend heavily on the number of players in the current wave of content.
For the remaining community, Xal’atath’s release marked an unexpected signal. After years of purely administrative server management, the move shows that the game hasn’t been completely written off from the publisher’s portfolio. However, whether the announcement will develop into lasting support will still depend on the long-term loyalty of players.
