Development studio Crystal Dynamics has teamed up with partner studio Flying Wild Hog and publisher Amazon Games to deliver a new behind-the-scenes video for the upcoming action-adventure game Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Episode ten of the accompanying developer documentation focuses on the game’s third chapter: a reinterpretation of the Egypt level from the original 1996 classic. In addition to providing an in-depth look at the design of the Unreal Engine 5-powered environments, the developers explained how dilapidated temple complexes, complex puzzle mechanics, and historical mythological elements were modernized to further expand the series’ story.
In the new developer video Egypt Reimagined, participating level designers and narrative directors explain the philosophy behind the redevelopment of the underground desert region. Egypt is a key plot point throughout the game, with Lara Croft uncovering a deeper story behind the scenes as she searches for the final fragment of Sion’s artifact.
To enhance the cramped, dark atmosphere of the ancient site of Kamun, the team used the dynamic lighting effects of Laura’s flashlights to vividly highlight the hieroglyphics carved directly into the geometry of the space.
Development work focused on redesigning the puzzle and trap room gameplay mechanics. The team designed new missions closely tied to Egyptian mythology, including the Test of Anubis, where players must manipulate the mechanism of a scale to weigh the heart.
The trap design surrounding the myth of the dismembered god Osiris also combines plot elements directly with the physical switch puzzles to avoid duplicating the original title. The visuals were implemented thanks to historically based research, supplemented by original developer notes on the core design.
The game will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 12, 2027, aiming to provide a modern gaming experience for loyal fans and new players.
